SCC-AASHE Curriculum Colloquium

This Colloquium is being jointly organized by the Sustainability Curriculum
Consortium (SCC) and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability
in Higher Education (AASHE)

The Curriculum Colloquium is the premier gathering for faculty from any discipline who are engaged in sustainability education. Taking place on Sunday, Oct. 4, this all-day pre-conference event will focus on pedagogy, content and leadership for sustainability education. It will include a mix of panels, workshops, roundtables and facilitated dialogue and an emphasis on peer-to-peer exchange.

The SCC was established solely to support university-level faculty tasked to teach sustainability topics. SCC aligns its activities around three key themes — Pedagogy, Substantive Content, and Leadership — and offers webinars, online cohorts, workshops and advisory services to faculty and academic programs in sustainability. As an independent not-for-profit, SCC supports and collaborates with AASHE as an AASHE corporate member.

Proposals to present at the Curriculum Colloquium are being accepted through April 12.

The organizers invite submissions on full range of issues related to sustainability curriculum, including connecting curriculum to real-world sustainability policy and practices; fundamentals for teaching sustainability; perspectives on competencies and learning outcomes; effective pedagogy, tools and resources for teaching sustainability; change management for curricular change; prospects for certification and accreditation; sustainability program development and evaluation; sustainability course design; applied learning for sustainability; equity and diversity; aligning curriculum with the SDGs; and interdisciplinary collaboration.

He has over 25 years of experience as an attorney and consultant focusing on environmental regulatory innovation, strategic environmental management, sustainable business practices and corporate social responsibility. He has taught on these and related topics at the University of Pennsylvania, City University of New York (CUNY), Fordham University, and George Mason University.

Julian-Dautremont-Smith2Julian Dautremont is Director of Programs at AASHE. He has played leadership roles in creating the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) as well as the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment. He also has experience working as Chief Sustainability Officer of Alfred State College as Senior Program Manager with GreenerU. Julian is a member of SCC’s Advisory Council.

Economics for Sustainability Studies: Pathways for Economic Change

In this webinar, Tina Evans offers an overview of an upper-division course in sustainable economics for Sustainability Studies majors. As an interdisciplinary course rooted in biophysical economics, the course helps students develop broad conceptual understanding of current local/global economic systems, the monetary system, and mainstream economic thought and practice. Students learn how and why mainstream neoclassical economics is inconsistent with known science and incompatible with sustainability. This session also provides an example of a course simulation project in which students design a community-based complementary currency that could serve as a leverage point for increasing local economic sustainability and resiliency. The content and processes of this course are especially relevant to understanding and addressing the current economic crisis.

Dr. Tina Lynn Evans is a Professor of Sustainability Studies at Colorado Mountain College (CMC) where she teaches in the Bachelor of Arts program in that field. She is also the author of Occupy Education: Living and Learning Sustainability (2012, Peter Lang). Dr. Evans has led and participated in extensive course and program development efforts in environmental and sustainability studies for more than 15 years. She focuses much of her teaching on sustainability theory and practice, socio-cultural aspects of sustainability, sustainable economics, energy issues in society, permaculture design, and career development in sustainability. Her recent publications focus on sustainability competencies and pedagogies, sustainable leadership, hope and agency in sustainability education, and transdisciplinary theory and practice. Evans was awarded the 2017 Campus Sustainability Research Award from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education for her article “Finding Heart: Generating and Maintaining Hope and Agency through Sustainability Education” (Journal of Sustainability Education, November 2017). That same year, she was also named college-wide faculty of the year at Colorado Mountain College. Evans also serves as the lead designer and implementer of the Bear Park Permaculture Center at the Steamboat Springs campus of CMC. Bear Park is a two-thirds acre site that serves as a living laboratory for permaculture, sustainability studies, environmental science, culinary arts, art, and other academic programs.

Gary Lawrence has been in the trenches of local government, academia, NGOs and the private sector working on a range of sustainability issues and he has the battle scars to prove it. Many of his scars healed with a little more wisdom about what doesn’t work and what might work better. He would like to share some of his experiences with you. Despite the great investment of thought and money, sustainability has failed to shape necessary political, economic and social change since Our Common Future was published. Some reasons for lack of progress relate to doing short term economic thinking by businesses and investors. Other factors have to do with competition within advocacy groups for the ownership of the idea and the priorities of their members. The academic community, too, bears great responsibility by not finding ways to synthesize its research and teaching so that society can better understand where the value of leveraged changes can be found. In this webinar, Gary Lawrence will explore the fundamental reasons why communicators have not found a way to penetrate the public’s consciousness so they will focus on the importance to “me,” not to some anonymous “other.”

Gary Lawrence has worked on sustainability problems and delivered sustainable outcomes within and between non-governmental, governmental, private/corporate and multilateral institutions locally and globally. As Seattle’s Planning Director he led the development of the world’s first sustainably focused municipal comprehensive plan. At the University of Washington he created and lead the first academic center for sustainable communities. During this period he was also a consultant to the US Conference of Mayors, National Association of Counties, PCSD, the OECD an was a negotiator for the US at Habitat II. Habitat II’s chairman in Istanbul meeting called Gary’s position paper for the OECD the single most important intellectual contribution to the entire Habitat process. After leaving the University of Washington he became a Principal and Urban Strategy Leader at The Arup Group where part of his responsibility was helping better integrate sustainability into Arup’s internationally renown design culture. He worked with leaders and staff in all geographies. From Arup he went to AECOM as their first Chief Sustainability Officer. Working with corporate leadership and business leaders in all geographies, he led sustainability and CSR reporting as well as helping businesses win work through helping clients deliver more sustainable outcomes. Since leaving AECOM he has worked on better integration of sustainability, resilience and adaptation strategies to reduce societal risk with some emphasis on disaster risk reduction activities within the UN system. He has also been active writing and speaking on the Sustainable Development Goals as well as how to embrace scientific doubt in societies for which certainty has become the political center.
